APRIL MyHealth International for expats in Africa

APRIL's MyHealth International is long-term cover for people living abroad, with four levels that all include hospitalisation, cancer treatment and evacuation, and a geography you define by choosing countries. IPMIAfrica explains how it reads from Africa.

In short: APRIL MyHealth International is long-term cover for expats with four levels, Explore, Essential, Extensive and Elite, all of which include hospitalisation, cancer treatment and medical evacuation. You choose the countries covered rather than a fixed region. It suits expats in Africa who want evacuation at every level and precise geography, less so anyone with medical history, since pre-existing conditions are not systematically covered.
Key takeaways
  • Overall annual limits run from €/$500,000 on Explore to €/$4,000,000 or unlimited on Elite.
  • Outpatient cover is optional on every level, and maternity can only be selected together with outpatient.
  • Worldwide cover on trips of up to 90 days applies to accidents and emergencies, not planned treatment abroad.
  • Applicants complete a health questionnaire, and the individual terms offered after medical review are decisive.
  • Schedules are published in euros or US dollars, so match the plan currency to what you earn or hold.

Four levels, one shared core

MyHealth International is APRIL International's long-term international private medical insurance (IPMI) for expatriates, international assignees, families, retirees, digital nomads and freelancers. It is a distinct product from APRIL's separate Thailand, UAE and Singapore plans, and this page covers only the international product.

Explore€/$500,000Hospitalisation, cancer and evacuation; optional outpatient and pharmacy, dental and other benefits

EliteFrom €/$4,000,000 to unlimitedThe top tier; hospitalisation, cancer, evacuation and medical imaging shown at 100%

The currency, ceiling and benefits that apply to you are defined in APRIL's current Details of Benefits. A benefit shown at 100% is still subject to the policy terms and the overall limit.

What is included and what is optional

All four levels include hospitalisation, cancer treatment and medical evacuation and repatriation. From there the plan is built up by option:

Deductibles and detailed benefit limits depend on the configuration you choose, so read the live benefit document for your quote rather than carrying figures across from another market. The rule linking maternity to outpatient is the one most often missed: a family wanting maternity needs to budget for the outpatient option too. Our guide to inpatient versus outpatient cover explains what that option adds day to day.

Choosing your countries, and travel outside them

APRIL's approach to geography is different from the worldwide-or-not model most insurers use. The application lets you select the countries you want covered, including your country of nationality. On top of that, APRIL describes worldwide cover for accidents and emergencies during trips of up to 90 consecutive days, except in excluded countries. The chosen area and the excluded-country rules are confirmed in the issued documents.

Claims, access to care and underwriting

On underwriting, applicants complete a health questionnaire. APRIL says pre-existing conditions are not systematically covered, so the individual terms offered after medical review are what count. Exclusions, deductibles, pre-authorisation rules and eligibility are in the General Terms and Conditions, the product information sheet and the Details of Benefits. Our pre-existing conditions guide explains what a questionnaire-based review usually leads to.

APRIL states that the product is designed and managed by APRIL International Care France, with Groupama Gan Vie covering medical and contingency benefits and CHUBB European Group SE covering repatriation and personal liability. Confirm the entities that apply to your issued contract.

Using APRIL MyHealth International from Africa

Because APRIL lets you choose the covered countries rather than a fixed worldwide region, readers in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania and Mauritius need to think about where treatment might realistically happen. Your country of residence and your country of nationality are the obvious selections; if serious illness would mean travelling to another country for care, that country needs to be in the chosen list too, because the 90-day worldwide cover is for accidents and emergencies on trips, not for planned treatment. Our guide to regional versus worldwide cover helps you decide how wide the list should be.

Medical evacuation and repatriation are included on every MyHealth International level, from Explore upward, and the repatriation benefit is stated to be covered by CHUBB European Group SE. For members in countries where complex treatment may mean a flight, that inclusion at the entry level is a point in APRIL's favour. Read the terms with our evacuation guide to hand.

Schedules are published in euros or US dollars, which is worth matching to the currency you earn or hold. Direct settlement with hospitals and the Easy Claim route for reimbursements cover the two main ways you will use the plan, and unlimited telehealth consultations give a first line of advice where local specialists are hard to reach. IPMIAfrica compares APRIL on the same inputs as every other insurer, so the effect of your country list and options shows as a real price.

Who APRIL MyHealth International suits

APRIL suits someone who wants hospitalisation, cancer and evacuation included at every level, prefers to define the covered countries precisely rather than pay for a whole region, and values digital claims, direct hospital settlement and telehealth. The choice of euro or US dollar schedules helps if you are paid in one of them.

It is worth comparing alternatives if you want outpatient, dental and maternity included as standard rather than configured as options, or if you have medical history, since pre-existing conditions are not systematically covered. Browse all insurers we cover.
