What is IPMIAfrica?
IPMIAfrica is a free comparison site for international private medical insurance for expats and families living in Africa. Nomi, our AI assistant, quotes 20+ insurers live, ranks every plan on real price and explains the cover in plain English. An experienced broker is available whenever you want to talk.
Which African countries do you cover?
International health insurance is built for expats and globally mobile people, so we can quote cover for most countries of residence across Africa. Our country guides cover South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania and Mauritius in detail. Just tell Nomi where you live.
Is medical evacuation included?
On most international plans evacuation and repatriation are included or available as a low-cost addition, and in much of Africa they are the benefit that matters most. Nomi asks where you live and work so that the plans it ranks have an evacuation benefit that fits, and our evacuation guide explains what to check in the wording.
Should I choose Africa-only or worldwide cover?
Choose by where you would realistically be treated for something serious, not by where you live. Africa-only is cheapest and suits people treated locally or in a regional hub. Worldwide excluding the USA adds Europe, the UK, India and home countries and is what most expats in Africa choose. Add the USA only if you need it.
How does international cover differ from a local medical scheme or national health insurance?
Local schemes and national health insurance are built around one country's hospitals and currency and rarely pay for treatment abroad or evacuation. International cover follows you across borders, renews for life and pays for private treatment anywhere in your area of cover. Some countries require you to register for a national scheme regardless; check the rule that applies to you.
Can I be covered with a pre-existing condition?
Often, though the condition itself may be excluded or carry a loading. Insurers use full medical underwriting, which gives a written decision up front, or a moratorium, which excludes recent conditions for a set period. If you already hold an international plan, switch terms may carry your existing cover across. Nomi asks the questions that point to the right route.
Is it free to use?
Yes. Comparing and quoting is free with no obligation. We are paid by the insurer only if you take out a policy, and the price you pay is the same as going direct.
Is my data safe, and can I speak to a real person?
We collect only what is needed to quote, never sell your data, and you deal with an experienced broker. Whenever you want, Nomi hands you to a person who can answer questions, finalise the details and arrange your cover.
Are the prices guaranteed?
Quotes are indicative and based on what you tell Nomi. Your final premium and acceptance are confirmed by the insurer at underwriting, and can vary with your medical history, country of residence and the choices you make.
