Allianz Care international health insurance for expats in Africa
Allianz Care builds its international cover from three core plans plus matching out-patient and dental modules, and it is one of the few insurers that lets you choose how your medical history is underwritten. IPMIAfrica sets out how it works from Africa.
- Any out-patient or dental module must sit at the same level as the core plan you choose.
- Moratorium underwriting asks no health questions but applies a 24-month waiting period to pre-existing conditions.
- Skipping required pre-authorisation cuts an eligible claim to 80% of inpatient and 50% of other benefits.
- Allianz publishes four areas, Worldwide, Worldwide excluding USA, Africa only and Europe; both worldwide areas include every African country IPMIAfrica covers.
- Emergencies need no prior approval, but Allianz must be told of the admission within 48 hours.
How the plan is put together
Allianz Care is the international private medical insurance (IPMI) arm of Allianz, one of the largest insurance groups in the world. Its international plans follow a simple pattern: pick one of three core plans, then bolt on optional out-patient and dental modules. The one rule to remember is that any module you add must sit at the same level as the core you chose, so a Care Enhanced core takes Care Enhanced out-patient and dental, not a mix.
| Core plan | Where it sits |
|---|---|
| Care Base | Entry-level core cover |
| Care Enhanced | The middle tier, with broader limits and benefits |
| Care Signature | Allianz's most comprehensive level |
Maximum plan limit: Care Base US$1,350,000 (£830,000), Care Enhanced US$2,700,000 (£1,660,000), Care Signature US$5,000,000 (£3,100,000). Areas of cover: Worldwide, Worldwide excluding USA, Africa only and Europe (Allianz Care Table of Benefits, Care, valid from 1 November 2025, pp.6 and 20, read 19 October 2026).
What each layer covers
- Core plan: inpatient and day-patient hospital treatment, including surgery.
- Out-patient module: consultations, diagnostics and therapies, added at your plan level.
- Dental module: dental benefits, again at your plan level.
- Servicing: the MyHealth app handles claims and documents, backed by a 24/7 multilingual helpline.
When weighing Allianz against another insurer, compare the core level and modules first, then the area of cover. As with most international plans, removing the USA from the area, if you have no need for it, is the single largest saving. Our guide to inpatient versus outpatient cover helps you decide whether the out-patient module is worth adding for your household.
A genuine choice of underwriting
Most insurers assess your medical history one way. Allianz Care offers a choice, which is why it is often the answer for people who have something in their medical past. The options are:
- Full Medical Underwriting (FMU)
- You answer Allianz's application, which has 20 health questions. Allianz reviews your history and tells you before you buy what is covered, excluded or loaded, so there is certainty from day one.
- Moratorium
- No health questions at application. Pre-existing conditions carry a 24-month waiting period and can become eligible once you have gone two continuous years without symptoms, treatment or advice for them.
- Continued Personal Medical Exclusions (CPME)
- If you are switching from another insurer, your existing personal exclusions carry across as they are, with no fresh underwriting of new conditions.
- Switch terms
- You move onto broadly equivalent terms from a prior plan. These terms must be properly maintained, or Allianz may fall back to full medical underwriting.
If you have any medical history, the basis you pick changes what is covered from the first day. Our pre-existing conditions guide compares the options in plain English, Nomi can flag the question during a comparison, and an experienced adviser confirms the terms before you buy.

Claims, pre-authorisation and deadlines
Allianz's claims rules are clear and worth knowing before you need them:
- Pre-authorisation is required for inpatient and high-cost treatment. The Table of Benefits flags which items need it.
- If you skip required pre-authorisation and the claim is later found eligible, Allianz pays 80% of inpatient benefits and 50% of other benefits. Pre-authorising is cheaper than not.
- Emergencies do not need authorisation in advance, but you must tell Allianz about the admission within 48 hours.
- Out-patient and dental claims are generally reimbursed through the MyHealth app.
- Invoices should be submitted within 60 days of discharge unless special arrangements are in place.
Using Allianz Care from Africa
For IPMIAfrica readers in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania and Mauritius, Allianz Care publishes four areas of cover, Worldwide, Worldwide excluding USA, Africa only and Europe (Allianz Care Table of Benefits, Care, valid from 1 November 2025, pp.6 and 20, read 19 October 2026). The two worldwide areas include Africa, and Africa only is the narrower choice; check which countries Allianz counts as Africa. Within the chosen area a member is covered at home and when treated in another country. That matters in places where a complex diagnosis may mean travelling for care. Our guide to regional versus worldwide cover explains why that flexibility is worth paying for in some countries and not in others.
Allianz publishes each plan limit in sterling, euros, US dollars and Swiss francs, and the plan currency is set at quote. Two practical rules apply wherever you are treated: get pre-authorisation for planned inpatient and high-cost treatment, and in an emergency notify Allianz within 48 hours of admission so the 80% and 50% reductions never bite. Day-to-day out-patient and dental claims run through the MyHealth app, and the 24/7 multilingual helpline is there for the moments when the app is not enough.
Who Allianz Care suits
Allianz Care is a strong fit if you want a global insurer behind the plan, a clean core-plus-modules structure, and above all a choice of underwriting basis. For anyone with medical history, being able to pick between full medical underwriting, moratorium and switch terms is genuinely valuable.
It is worth comparing alternatives if you are price-led at the entry level, or you would rather buy one all-in plan than build cover from modules. See how it lines up in our Cigna versus Allianz and Allianz versus IMG comparisons, or browse every insurer we cover.
